Athletes Athletes have the option to receive guidance and counseling for any number of personal challenges. These personal challenges include but are not limited to injury, anxiety, mood, disordered eating, substance abuse, career transition, and coping effectively with life events and crises. Methods and procedures used to assist athletes include: one to one counseling, athlete and parent meetings, as well as other approaches. Team Development Coaches who seek to increase their team's effectiveness are invited to participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of an individualized performance enhancement program. Involvement of the team can occur in four stages: 1) An assessment of mental and emotional strengths as well as limitations is conducted with each athlete. Typically, the assessment includes completing a mental skills inventory and an interview with a member of the team staff. 2) Based on assessment results, goals are identified for each athlete in one or more mental and emotional skill areas. 3) Upon specification of goals for each athlete, methods and procedures are determined to help the athlete achieve the goals. A plan for monitoring progress is also formalized. 4) An individualized mental plan is then implemented, with the athlete and coaching staff meeting on a scheduled basis to review the progress in relation to the plan. Coach and Support Staff Consultation Coaches and sport staff, such as athletic trainers, can choose to receive services in a range of areas related to health and performance. These requests and interests may relate to the personal development of individual athletes as well as for themselves as professionals.
